BISA PhotoSharad Pawar, the then Minister of Agriculture, Government of India (second from right), inaugurated the international seminar, “Meeting Challenges of Global Wheat Production ‒ A Tribute to Dr. Norman E. Borlaug” organized by the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) & Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) on November 21, 2009 at New Delhi. It was at this seminar that the idea of establishing an international institute for South Asia in memory of Dr. Borlaug was mooted by Thomas A. Lumpkin, Director General, CIMMYT and found spontaneous acceptance by the then Minister of Agriculture, and Mangla Rai, the then Secretary (DARE) and Director General, ICAR, among others.

  • BISA’s Fifth Executive Committee Meeting

    The 5th Executive Committee meeting of BISA was held at Narmada Jackson Hotel, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India on September 29, 2014. John Snape, Chair, BoT, CIMMYT and Nicole Birrell, Board Member, BoT, CIMMYT made introductory remarks and S Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR made the opening remarks. The committee welcomed H S Gupta, who took over as the new Director General of BISA.

    Sharad Pawar, India’s Minister of Agriculture, and Jeanie Laube Borlaug, daughter of the late Norman E. Borlaug, unveiled a statute of Borlaug at the National Agricultural Science Complex in New Delhi on August 19, 2013.

    The Borlaug Institute for South Asia (BISA) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) jointly organised an international conference “The 50 Pact” at New Delhi from August 16 to 17, 2013 to celebrate 50 years of Norman Borlaug’s first visit to India.
